RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) — According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, a man narrowly escaped with his life after his vehicle was struck by gunfire nine times as he sat in a hotel parking lot in Riverview.

HCSO said it happened on Friday at the Extended Stay hotel on Everhart Road at around 2:15 p.m., when deputies responded to a report of gunshots.

Court records show that the victim had multiple verbal confrontations with the suspect, 37-year-old Jahsheed Scatliffe-Kalunda, in the week leading up to the attack.

The victim was driving a Toyota Camry, and when he pulled into the hotel parking lot and parked his car, he saw a Kia circle his vehicle before going behind the hotel. He moved his car to a different spot, and shortly after, Scatliffe-Kalunda appeared and brandished a firearm.

Surveillance cameras captured the shooting and show the suspect begin firing at the victim before running away. Court documents said Scatliffe-Kalunda’s firearm appears to have malfunctioned, and he began to run away before seeming to correct the issue and running back toward the victim to continue firing at him.

The Camry was struck nine times, including through the windshield, but fortunately, the victim was not injured during the attack. After Scatliffe-Kalunda ran away, the victim got out of his car and sought shelter in the hotel, the documents said.

The suspect was later apprehended during a traffic stop, and a search of his apartment revealed a firearm with one CBC Luger 9mm round left in the magazine. The same spent casings were found at the scene after the shooting.

Scatliffe-Kalunda has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting at or into a vehicle and discharging a firearm in public.
