VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A person wielding a knife who charged at Volusia deputies and police was fatally shot in a residence near Daytona Beach on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

At about 9:30 p.m., deputies arrived at the 1400 block of Derbyshire Road responding to a reported stabbing. They found a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man with several stab wounds and discovered that the suspect was still inside, as shared by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office on social media.

Upon urging the suspect to exit, and suspecting there might be another individual inside, deputies, along with police, entered the house again to search for additional victims, according to the post.

“As the team moved through the house, the suspect suddenly charged out of a bedroom door, screaming with a large knife raised above his head,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “The suspect was shot multiple times by law enforcement and was pronounced deceased on scene.”

The release states police from Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach and Holly Hill also responded to the incident, adding no deputies or officers were injured.

The two stabbing victims were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of their injuries and were in stable condition at last check, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, the release states. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, following protocol, according to the sheriff’s office.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood will hold a news conference about the shooting at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7.
