VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Just days after the Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported the theft of four horses in the area, authorities have successfully apprehended the individual believed to be responsible.
Initially, deputies had informed the public about the incident, which took place on a property in Osteen, and had offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the perpetrator’s capture.
However, by Wednesday evening, authorities shared that two of the missing horses were found safe in South Florida.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Lazaro Benitez Guzman, was taken into custody in Hialeah. He now faces charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
“Through effective police work, advanced technology, and tremendous support from our partner agencies, we’re pleased to return these horses to their rightful owners and have the suspect under arrest,” deputies announced.
Furthermore, the sheriff’s office disclosed that Guzman is an undocumented immigrant from Cuba, resulting in an ICE detainer being issued against him.
