VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Just days after the Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported the theft of four horses in the area, authorities have successfully apprehended the individual believed to be responsible.

Initially, deputies had informed the public about the incident, which took place on a property in Osteen, and had offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the perpetrator’s capture.

However, by Wednesday evening, authorities shared that two of the missing horses were found safe in South Florida.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Lazaro Benitez Guzman, was taken into custody in Hialeah. He now faces charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property, as stated by the sheriff’s office.

“Through effective police work, advanced technology, and tremendous support from our partner agencies, we’re pleased to return these horses to their rightful owners and have the suspect under arrest,” deputies announced.

Furthermore, the sheriff’s office disclosed that Guzman is an undocumented immigrant from Cuba, resulting in an ICE detainer being issued against him.

The suspect — identified as Lazaro Benitez Guzman, 26 — was arrested in Hialeah and faces charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property, the sheriff’s office declared.

“Thanks to diligent police work, great use of technology and a lot of help from our partner agencies, we’re reuniting these horses with their owners, and we have a suspect in custody,” deputies wrote.

The sheriff’s office also revealed that Guzman is an undocumented immigrant from Cuba, leading to an ICE detainer being placed on him.

Meanwhile, investigators said they are still searching for the whereabouts of the remaining two horses.
