Bread distributed in twelve states has been recalled due to the potential presence of undeclared hazelnuts, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

According to an announcement from the FDA, Hartford Bakery, Inc. is recalling six batches of bread sold at well-known stores such as Kroger and Walmart.

The recall notice warns, “Individuals with a nut allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts may experience serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these items.”

Specifically, the recall affects about 883 12-ounce loaves of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf with a UPC of 24126018152 on the bottom of the plastic bag it comes in. The bread has an expiration date of 07/13/2025, according to the company.

You’ll also see lot codes of T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, or T10 174020406 on the front of the packaging.

The artisan bread was sold at retailers, including Kroger and Walmart, in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The release included the below photos of the bread.

According to the recall notice, while no major reports of injury or illness have surfaced, Hartford Bakery is “aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consumption.” Consumers also reported seeing the nuts in the bread before consuming it.

The company said the packaging warns the bread may contain tree nuts, but not that hazelnuts are present.

“An investigation revealed an error in change of packaging for a hazelnut-containing bread to the implicated white bread product,” Hartford Bakery explained.

If you have a loaf of the impacted bread, you should return it to the store for a full refund. Questions can be directed to Hartford Bakery by calling 1-812-425-4642 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT.
