(KTLA) – A chaotic scene unfolded at a California port Tuesday morning when dozens of containers fell off a cargo ship.
The Coast Guard reported that the incident took place around 9 a.m. at the Port of Long Beach, with initial estimates suggesting that more than 67 containers fell into the water. Footage obtained by local affiliate KTLA captured the ship tilting to one side as one stack of containers collapsed, closely followed by another.
A smaller vessel was seen next to the larger cargo ship, possibly trying to intercept the falling containers, as a tugboat worked to push the containers back toward the dock.
According to a statement from Port of Long Beach spokesperson Art Marroquin, the containers fell from the ship named the Mississippi at the Pier G container terminal.
“Cargo operations have been temporarily suspended at the terminal as responders work to secure the containers,” Marroquin said.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
