Savannah, Ga. () – As we flip the calendar from September to October, we’re not simply stepping into a new month, but also embracing the autumn season. October ushers in distinct changes in weather, daylight, and our daily routines. Here’s a peek into what to expect in the coming weeks.

Less Daylight, Earlier Sunsets

One of the most apparent transitions this month is the diminishing daylight hours. Tonight, the sun will set at 7:08 p.m., but in just two weeks, darkness will already set in by this time. By Halloween’s end of the month, the sun will set as early as 6:34 p.m.

You’ll notice shifts in sunrise times, too. This morning, sunrise was at 7:18 a.m., but come October 31, it’ll be at 7:40 a.m. Altogether, we lose around 56 minutes of daylight during the month.

Cooler Weather on the Way

October also brings the much-anticipated fall weather. At the start of the month, average high temperatures hover in the low 80s, with lows in the mid 60s. By Halloween, these adjust to average highs in the mid 70s and lows in the low 50s.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to the 90° heat, you’re in luck! Those sizzling summer days are officially behind us.

How Much Rain to Expect?

October is typically a relatively wet period. On average, we see about 3.75 inches of rainfall, so expect a few soggy days throughout the month.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, this year’s forecast for October anticipates a slightly warmer trend than usual for our area. This suggests we might continue experiencing more warm days especially early on. As for precipitation, the forecast indicates equal chances of above or below average rain, so we might end up with typical October rainfall totals.

A Month to Look Forward To

While October brings darker mornings and earlier sunsets, it also brings a lot to look forward to like cooler air, cozy evenings, fall colors, and the return of seasonal traditions.

Whether you’re gearing up for Halloween costumes, planning your Thanksgiving menu, or just enjoying your favorite pumpkin-spiced treat, there’s no denying it: fall is officially here!
