Why Bryan Kohberger won't have to tell victims' families what happened

() Trial attorney Mercedes Colwin believes Bryan Kohberger’s acceptance of a plea deal for the murders of four Idaho college students will likely rob the victims’ families of an explanation for the deaths.

confirmed the prosecution proposed dropping the death penalty in exchange for Kohberger, 30, pleading guilty to committing the murders and to a burglary charge.

Kohberger’s accepted plea has angered the family of one of the four victims. The family of Kaylee Goncalves, who died aged 21 on Nov. 13, 2022, said on Facebook they were “beyond furious” at the state of Idaho.

Given his acceptance of the deal, the families may never gain an understanding as to why he murdered the four college students Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, Goncalves and Ethan Chapin at an off-campus house near the University of Idaho.

“What the allocution is, generally, is, you’ve accepted this plea, you understand that you’re going to be in prison for life. No explanation [is needed],” Colwin told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”

“It’s going to be gut-wrenching, because you’re going to hear from these parents whose children were slaughtered, and they’re going to continue to live the nightmare, not knowing why their children were slaughtered. All they know is that this man’s life is spared and their children are dead.”
