ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – Friday night marked a significant achievement in Elizabethton football history as head coach Shawn Witten became the most successful coach in Cyclones history, overtaking his grandfather, Dave Rider.
The Cyclones delivered an impressive performance, defeating previously undefeated Cherokee 30–7. This victory brought Witten’s career record to 174–55 in his 19th season at the helm. His leadership has consistently driven success, including back-to-back unbeaten state championships in 2019 and 2020.
“It’s a bittersweet moment. My granddad was a legendary man and coach. Following in his footsteps is a tremendous honor and privilege,” Witten remarked. “The name Dave Rider resonates across the state. He was our hero, our father figure. Growing up with him and playing for him, it’s challenging to express what it truly means.”
Coach Witten and the Cyclones now look to extend that winning record further as they take on Northview Academy at home this Friday.
