Gut health has become a hot topic, with a strong focus on nurturing a balanced gastrointestinal system, particularly the stomach. Experts at Healthline highlight that neglecting gut health can lead to a range of issues, such as fatigue, digestive discomfort, and skin problems. Therefore, it’s crucial to consume foods and drinks that support a healthy and diverse gut microbiome.

You may have noticed the growing trend of ‘health shots’ lining supermarket shelves. These small bottles of juice claim to enhance digestion and support gut wellness. However, these can be expensive, and you might be surprised to learn that you can easily make a homemade version with just a few ingredients. Jordan Haworth, a nutritionist known as @mrguthealth, has been sharing his experiences with the Mediterranean diet and offers a cost-effective method for creating energy shots at home.

Earlier this year, Jordan shared a video demonstrating how to make two types of shots—one for energy and another for recovery. The energy shot, in particular, requires only three simple ingredients.

If you’re seeking a pre-workout boost or a way to kickstart your day, these homemade shots could be just what you need, according to a report from the Mirror.

The process is straightforward: take 100 grams of ginger, peel it, and slice it thinly. Ginger is praised by BBC Good Food for its anti-inflammatory properties and potential to help reduce blood pressure.

Beyond these benefits, ginger is known to alleviate gas and soothe the intestinal tract, making it an excellent choice for promoting digestive health.

For a nutritious pick-me-up, add some ginger to a blender along with 300ml of beetroot juice. The expert explains that this juice is rich in nitrates which can boost blood circulation and endurance.

Then, add the juice of one lemon, loaded with vitamin C that’s essential for cell health, glowing skin, robust bones, and wound recovery, according to the NHS.

Blend it all together to create six revitalising shots of this juice. The expert noted: “We’re not straining because we want to keep that prebiotic fibre.”

If you’re after another energising beverage following exercise, the gut health specialist shared a recipe for turmeric shots, explaining: “Turmeric contains curcumin, which is anti-inflammatory, so it’s great to take post-workout.”

To prepare this recipe, begin with 100g of fresh turmeric, peeled and ready for the blender.

You’ll also need 100g of peeled chopped ginger and 300ml of pineapple juice. The expert highlighted that pineapple juice is abundant in digestive enzymes and vital vitamin C.

Jordan added: “Don’t forget to add black pepper to activate the curcumin.”

After blending everything together, he enthused: “These will save your gut, your immune system and your bank account.”
