An armed man has been shot dead by police on a Melbourne freeway this morning.
Police were called to the Monash Freeway near the Eastlink interchange on-ramp at Dandenong North about 9.30am, following reports a man was armed with a weapon.
9News understands a tense stand-off occurred between officers and the man, before he was shot.
“An armed man has been shot by police following an incident in Dandenong North this morning,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
“It is believed responding officers were negotiating with the man when he was shot by police and died at the scene.
“There is no ongoing threat to the community.”
Multiple police vehicles and paramedics swarmed the scene, with the section of the freeway taped off.
All citybound lanes of the freeway have closed, with the Department of Transport urging motorists to exit the inbound lanes when possible.
A queue of traffic is building along the freeway, with significant delays expected.
“The scene is under the control of Victoria Police,” the Department of Transport statement read.
“The Monash Freeway will open as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident, which will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when a police firearm is discharged.
