Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is under increasing pressure to keep his position as first choice keeper with David Raya in line for a run in the first-team.

Mail Sport understands Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta is giving serious consideration to giving Raya, a loan arrival from Brentford, a prolonged first-team opportunity in the coming weeks.

Ramsdale has established himself as the Gunners’ No 1 since his arrival from Sheffield United in 2021 and is widely viewed as first-choice back-up to England’s starting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

However, there is a growing feeling at the Emirates that Arteta wants to give Raya an opportunity to stake his claim for a regular starting role in the team.

It remains to be seen when Arteta decides to make a change in goal, but Raya is said to have deeply impressed in training since his arrival, particularly with his ability to accurately play out from defence.

If he doesn’t play before, Raya’s first opportunity could arrive in the Carabao Cup, against his former club Brentford on September 27.

Premier League regulations would usually prohibit Raya from playing versus Thomas Frank’s team – but in the Carabao Cup loan players can play against their parent club provided they get permission.

Brentford, it is understood, are unlikely to oppose Raya’s inclusion.

But Raya is also now expected to have the chance to play himself into the Premier League team as Ramsdale sweats on his role as the club’s No 1.

Arsenal signed Spain keeper Raya on a season-long loan with the potential for a permanent deal.
