‘Mulan’ Heads Straight To Disney+ After Coronavirus Scuttles Theater Release

TOPLINE

Mulan won’t be released in U.S. theaters and will go direct to streaming service Disney+, Disney announced Tuesday, making it one of the first Hollywood tentpole films to forgo a U.S. theatrical release.

KEY FACTS

The live-action Mulan will be available on Disney+ September 4.

The film will only be available to Disney+ subscribers, who will have to pay $29.99 on top of the monthly $6.99 Disney+ fee.

In countries where Disney+ isn’t available, such as China, Mulan will be released in theaters.

The move comes after Disney had already delayed the film’s release three times since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the company doesn’t plan on bypassing theater releases in the future, calling the home-streaming debut a “one-off,” though he said it will be an experiment to see how successful this model can be.

Big number

60.5 million — that’s how many subscribers Disney+ has.

Key background

Most theaters in the U.S. plan to reopen in mid-to-late August, and some studios are still releasing films in theaters around that time, including New Mutants, another Disney film. But most major blockbusters have been pushed back to the end of 2020 or 2021, such as A Quiet Place Part 2 on September 4, Wonder Woman 1984 in October and Fast & Furious 9 in April 2021. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will be the first major film released in theaters since the pandemic began over Labor Day Weekend when it opens in select U.S. theaters (Internationally the film will be released in 70 countries on August 26).
