Upon arrival at the crossing located at Lorenzo and Cottage Roads, deputies discovered several individuals wearing ski masks inside a black van and a gray SUV positioned near the tracks, officials confirmed.
As deputies attempted to initiate traffic stops, both vehicles sped away, heading north on Interstate 55. During the pursuit, one of the vehicles collided with another car.
The chase led to a location near Francis Road and Vine Street in New Lenox, where a coordinated effort by officers from multiple agencies resulted in the capture of one suspect.
The apprehended individual was subsequently taken to a hospital for evaluation. Meanwhile, BNSF police are collaborating with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to formulate charges.
Another suspect, who fled the vehicle in New Lenox, remains on the loose and is described as a male wearing a ski mask and gray hooded sweatshirt.
Earlier Saturday, authorities asked New Lenox residents near Francis Road and Vine Street to remain inside. Residents can now leave their homes, officials said later Saturday afternoon.
Further information was not immediately available.
