A 23-month-old South Australian girl was rescued from a drain at a property at Elizabeth East earlier today after falling in and becoming wedged in a pipe.

Nayvah was playing at a friends house along side her mum, Samantha Walkley, moments before she fell.

“I just turned my back for two seconds and she was in the drain,” said Ms Walkely.

After several unsuccessful attempts to free her, Nayvah’s mother frantically dialled triple-zero and a short time later, the ‘wiggly’ rescue mission was underway.

Ms Walkely had a bottle on hand and Nayvah’s favourite band, The Wiggles, playing on the phone while several firefighters helped to free the child.

“Had a bit of The Wiggles on so we were just singing along trying to make it as calm for her as possible,” rescue firefighter Shamus Schutt said.

“We had to dig down quite deeply to make sure we didn’t break any of the earthware around her, we didn’t want to cause more trauma for her,” he said.

Rescuers sang along to the wiggles to help ease the childs nerves whilst being resuced from a drain she spent an hour stuck in.

Team work helped reunite Nayvah with her mum in less than hour.

“We managed to break the pipe where we could put an arm up the pipe and turn her leg around to get out of the s-bend,” Metropolitan Fire Service Station officer Andy Dunt said.

It was a nerve-wracking ordeal for Nayvah’s mother, unsure of what injuries her daughter may have sustained from the fall.

“I was a little bit stressed out because she can’t talk yet, so i didn’t know what was going to happen yet,” said Ms Walkely.

“I was scared she was going to have cuts or marks or something but she didn’t have absolutely anything.”

Nayvah was removed from the drain, looked over by paramedics and taken to watch The Wiggles from the comfort of her mother’s thankful arms.
