As part of a US defamation case brought by Meghan’s half-sister, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be questioned.

After the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Samantha Markle sued Meghan for “defamation and injurious falsehoods.”

She says Meghan hurt her reputation when she said she was “an only child,” which was “false and maliciously.”

A judge turned down Meghan’s request to stop the civil case depositions from happening.

In the US, a deposition is a formal statement of evidence that a court must take from a witness or a party to a lawsuit.

In the long-awaited interview with Winfrey, the couple talked about their families, their lives as royals, and their mental health.

In a court filing from March, the duchess’s half-sister said that Meghan made “demonstrably false and malicious statements” to people worldwide.

PA News Agency was able to get copies of the original motion.

They show that Samantha Markle, who has MS and uses a wheelchair, brought the action and said that about 50 million people in 17 countries had watched the Winfrey interview.

The motion says that it “disseminated false and malicious lies” and caused “humiliation, shame, and hatred on a worldwide scale” to Samantha Markle.

It also says that Meghan used “the powerful resources of the Royal Family’s public relations operation” to spread “lies worldwide” about Samantha Markle and their father, Thomas Markle. It calls this a “premeditated campaign to destroy their reputation and credibility.”

The motion says it was done “to preserve and promote the false “rags to royalty” story.”

Meghan had asked a Florida judge, Charlene Edwards Honeywell, to halt the depositions in the case, but she was denied her request on Tuesday.

The Times says that she said the jury was being asked to decide what a “close” relationship between the two half-sisters is.

The defamation case comes after Prince Harry’s autobiography, “Spare,” came out in January, and the couple’s Netflix show came out the year before.
