AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating the shooting of a 2-year-old boy that happened on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a release, officers were called to the 1500 block of Hyde Park Avenue at approximately 3 p.m. for a report of a shooting. When police arrived, they found the toddler had been shot in the abdomen.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown and still under investigation,” police noted in its release.

Police say the child was transported to an area hospital where he is undergoing surgery. His exact condition is unknown at this time.  

Akron police report that they have detained a 17-year-old boy. 

“Moments later, another 17-year-old male was self-transported separately to the hospital by private vehicle with an injury to his leg that investigators believe may be related,” police added. 

Akron police emphasize that this information is preliminary. The incident remains under investigation.
