Andy Cohen recently offered a glimpse into his well-known friendship with musician John Mayer during an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. The Emmy-winning producer, aged 57, shared anecdotes about their usual nights out, revealing that a few drinks have occasionally led to some playful physical interactions.

Cohen described their typical evening, saying, “We start by going to dinner, and we always sit on the same side of the booth. That’s our spot.” This seating choice underscores the comfort and camaraderie between the two friends.

Although holding hands isn’t part of their routine, Cohen acknowledged that their outings often become more affectionate as the night progresses. “As the evening goes on, I find myself leaning into him because he usually has his arm around me,” Cohen said. He recounted a recent night at the Sunset Tower where their closeness became particularly noticeable. “I was getting so physical with him by the end that he had to say, ‘Andy,'” Cohen recalled with a laugh.

The charismatic host of “Watch What Happens Live” noted that the playful energy stemmed from him using Mayer’s body to illustrate a story about someone else. This dynamic highlights the unique bond and lighthearted connection they share.

‘As the night goes on, I find myself sinking into him because he’ll have his arm around me,’ Cohen revealed. ‘As a matter of fact, we were at the Sunset Tower last week, and I was getting so physical with him by the end that he was like, “Andy.”‘

The Watch What Happens Live host said the flirty energy came while he was ‘kind of using [John’s] body to tell a story about a guy.’

‘I was in my cups a little bit,’ Cohen joked, using the old-fashioned phrase for being tipsy. ‘We were in a puddle of laughter. We love each other deeply. We actually do.’

When host Alex Cooper asked if Cohen might secretly be in love with Mayer, the talk show host didn’t hesitate to shut it down – though he admitted the connection between them is special.

‘I’m not secretly in love with him. No, we love each other,’ Cohen said. ‘If I could find a gay guy that was him, it would be magic. But you know what? I’m so grateful for the love that we have.’

Cohen and Mayer, 48, have been close friends for more than a decade, sparking endless fan speculation about whether there’s ever been more between them.

The pair often travel together, appear at events side by side, and frequently gush about each other in interviews – though both have repeatedly insisted their relationship is purely platonic.

Later in the Call Her Daddy chat, Cohen shared that Mayer even gave him a little pep talk before the taping.

‘We FaceTimed yesterday,’ Cohen said. ‘He was like, ‘You’re going to be great. Go. Deliver. You know what you’re doing.’ Fair. Love you, John.’

When Cohen jokingly asked what Mayer would say if he requested help launching a music career, he mimicked Mayer’s response with a grin: ‘Absolutely, baby.’

Though their friendship might look like a rom-com to fans, Cohen says he’s perfectly happy keeping it exactly as it is — warm, affectionate, and full of laughter.

‘I’m so grateful for the love that we have,’ he said.

Last year, Cohen denied he and Mayer were in a romantic relationship. 

When asked about their friendship as part of a profile for The Hollywood Reporter, Cohen said: ‘I honestly love John Mayer, and he loves me. But because we’re so affectionate toward each other, people don’t know what box to put that in. They assume we’re sleeping with each other, which we are most definitely not.’ 

In 2023, Cohen insisted that his affection for Mayer had never gotten physical. 

At Howard’s urging, Andy even swore on his children Ben and Lucy that he and John have never fooled around.

However Cohen did tell the self-proclaimed King Of All Media: ‘I am in love with John Mayer. We are in love with each other.’

‘I mean, swear on your children’s lives there’s never been anything sexual between you and John Mayer,’ Howard said, and Andy readily agreed: ‘I swear.’

While the two longtime pals don’t hold hands, Cohen admitted their hangouts often grow more affectionate as the evening unfolds; seen in 2015

‘I’m not secretly in love with him. No, we love each other,’ Cohen said. ‘If I could find a gay guy that was him, it would be magic’

In 2018, he told CNN that they ‘have a very sweet friendship’ and ‘have a great love for each other.’

When asked what he was looking for in a partner, he joked: ‘Someone who is like John Mayer… Just kidding. What am I looking for? I’m looking for someone strong, independent, smart, who has their own thing going on.’ 

While Cohen is openly gay, Mayer has only publicly dated women. 

The musician exes include Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson and Minka Kelly. 

In May 2024, Mayer wrote a letter to The Hollywood Reporter addressing the rumors surrounding his friendship with Cohen.

‘I think that to suggest that people are dubious of a friendship like mine and Andy’s is to undermine the public’s ability to accept and understand diversity in all facets of culture, be it in art or in real life. I’d like to think they’re sophisticated enough to see a relationship like ours without assuming it must include a sexual component,’ he wrote via email.
