Labor leader Anthony Albanese has been accused of being transphobic after answering a flat ‘no’ when asked if he thought men could have babies.

The opposition leader was taking part in a media quickfire quiz of rapid questions when he was asked the apparently simple poser.

But his emphatic reply was rounded on by the LGBTQI community and supporters as ‘shameful’ and ‘transphobic’ for ignoring transgender males who give birth.

‘Albanese proud to deny the existence of trans people just weeks after attending Mardi Gras,’ lashed refugee activist Shane Bazzi.

‘This is what we mean about politicians pinkwashing. F***ing shameful. This election is going to be so painful.’

Another tweeted: ‘Just when I’m starting to think the @AustralianLabor Party has turned a new leaf on LGBTQ+ rights, Anthony Albanese shows up to remind me that he, too, is transphobic.’

Another said they could reach no other conclusion.

‘I’ve mulled it over and there’s no charitable reading I can give Albo for his “men don’t have babies” remark,’ they tweeted.

‘He knew trans people exist. He knew the question was loaded. He knew what Murdoch’s aims are.

‘If he didn’t know any of that, he’s not a leader I can have faith in anyway.’

Other hoped to see an internal backlash against the Labor boss over the comment.

‘I look forward to seeing trans supportive people in the ALP condemn @AlboMP for his comment in the media today,’ tweeted one.

But others hailed Mr Albanese as a vocal supporter of LGBTQI activists and highlighted that he had attended Mardi Gras parades for 30 years.

In 2014, he insisted ‘that equal rights for all people—regardless of sexuality, race or gender—are a fundamental right.

‘I will continue to be a strong campaigner for equal rights, regardless of sexuality.’

But many said they simply couldn’t find anything to argue with Mr Albanese on the point.

‘”Can men have babies?” That would be a big No,’ tweeted one user, claiming to be from the ‘LGB Alliance’.

‘Only females have babies, they can call themselves anything they want to, doesn’t change the FACT, you still have to be female/woman to have children.

‘Don’t disrespect the class of woman, don’t demean what it means to be a woman.’

Another added: ‘I do not agree with Albo on many issues – but this isn’t even up for debate,

‘Men can’t have babies.’
