Charlie Kirk’s team is confronting the latest conspiracy theories about the death of the Turning Point USA founder. Andrew Kolvet, the executive producer of the Charlie Kirk Show, addressed baseless allegations on Monday concerning Kirk’s close associate, Mikey McCoy. These claims suggested McCoy’s behavior was suspicious following the shooting, particularly highlighting his quick exit from the scene while using his phone. Kolvet categorically dismissed these rumors, calling them a ‘highly offensive attack’ on Kirk’s loyal confidant.
The rumors originated from obscure creators before gaining traction through Candace Owens, a controversial figure and friend of Kirk. Owens has been pushing sensational theories connecting Kirk’s assassination to Israel. Kolvet responded by stating, ‘A video has surfaced attacking Mikey, Charlie’s friend and chief of staff, whom we all know and have seen on the show recently.’ He continued, ‘They accuse him of showing a casual or calm demeanor in the moments after Charlie’s murder, based on a brief video clip.’ Kolvet did not hold back, labeling the claims as ‘extremely repugnant.’
Turning Point USA’s leadership has been proactive in addressing these conspiracy narratives about Kirk, even verifying text messages that linked him to discussions about Israel. The attack on McCoy was sparked by a video from right-wing creators Ian Caroll and James Li, released last Friday. Candace Owens, another right-wing YouTuber, encouraged her audience to entertain similar suspicions during her show on Monday. She stated, ‘Mikey was behind the tent when Charlie was shot, and almost instantly, he does something odd. He lifts his phone to his ear and starts talking.’ Owens further alleged, ‘There was no dialing involved; Mikey didn’t have time to dial.’ She highlighted this by playing the clip where McCoy is seen with his phone to his ear right after the shooting.
‘[When I asked McCoy who he was on the phone with], no response,’ Owens said. ‘Weird. If that was me… I would instantly hit back… Here’s my call log. Here’s who I was on the phone with.’ Kolvet said that he had spoken to McCoy about what he did afterwards, but that both of them were so traumatized and in shock at the time they struggle to remember. McCoy does recall however that he called Erika Kirk, Charlie’s wife, and then his father, pastor Robert McCoy. ‘Charlie had given me similar instructions, if anything ever happens to me you call Erika, and he drilled that into Mikey’s brain so that when this moment of trauma happened, that he turned around and he knew he had to do it,’ Kolvet said. ‘This is part of the video allegations here, they think that, they’re alleging that he was on the phone immediately. He was not. He was taking social videos which he would send to our group chat, which we would then put on Charlie’s social while the event was happening.’
He added that Kirk was only two questions into the event at Utah Valley University when the assassin opened fire, meaning McCoy was using his phone already. ‘It was so blaringly loud, and he was so shellshocked, he put his fingers in his ear, but his phone was still in his hand,’ Kolvet added. When asked for additional comment by the Daily Mail about Kolvet, Owens responded: ‘My best advice to Mikey McCoy would be to simply release his call logs to clarify matters to any of the content creators who are asking questions. Truth is clarifying.’
Owens also said during the Monday evening episode of her show, that she thought she ‘would be fighting for answers for what actually happened on 9/10 alongside Charlie Kirk’s inner circle.’ Kirk was shot dead on September 10 while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson, 22, a left-wing college dropout, has been charged with his assassination. Kirk’s widow, Erika, joined President Donald Trump at the White House earlier this month to accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously on her husband’s behalf.
Kirk had built Turning Point USA into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in America, known for its campus activism and annual conferences that drew thousands of young conservatives . After his death, Erika publicly delivered a statement vowing to carry on his work as the new CEO of the organization.
Trump memorably eulogized Kirk at his memorial service days later and comforted Erika who mourned the loss of her husband. ‘We know the weight of this monumental loss is almost unbearable,’ he said. ‘But even in the midst of heartache and pain too great to even fathom, you have somehow found the strength and deep faith to be a comfort to millions and millions of people.’ More than 60,000 people attended the service which was held at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals NFL team.
