Dion Prestia Richmond Steven Mays Melbourne AFL

Two prominent AFL premiership players have found themselves at the center of legal proceedings, asserting their innocence in connection to a brawl that occurred in a coastal town. Both Richmond’s Dion Prestia, 33, and Melbourne’s Steven May, 34, have publicly claimed they were not present during the altercation.

In a recent development, the athletes made their appearance via videolink at the Dromana Magistrates Court for a brief hearing. The charges, which were filed in October, stem from an incident that took place roughly 10 months prior on Point Nepean Road in Sorrento, a location known for its scenic charm on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Their legal representation, Hargreaves, indicated that Victoria Police are currently evaluating the defense’s submission, prompting a request to delay proceedings until February for a contest mention. This move suggests a strategic effort to have the criminal charges dropped.

Prosecutor Alex Turner conceded to the proposed adjournment, acknowledging that the case had only recently been assigned to his unit. This delay will allow both sides more time to prepare their arguments.

As it stands, Prestia and May are expected to return for a more comprehensive hearing at the Frankston Magistrates Court scheduled for February 20. Until then, the footballers remain charged on summons, keenly anticipating the opportunity to clear their names.

Prestia and May, who remain charged on summons, will face Frankston Magistrates Court on February 20.

The pair, who started their AFL careers together at the Gold Coast Suns, previously released statements through their clubs proclaiming their innocence.

“I was not involved in the fight. I was not even physically present when it apparently took place,” Prestia said, in a statement issued by Richmond in October.

“I deny that I am guilty of these offences and will strenuously defend these charges.”

Melbourne said May had advised them he was not involved and he would “strongly defend” the charge in court.

Both AFL clubs are supportive of the players.

Prestia is a three-time premiership player with Richmond, and won the club’s best-and-fairest award in 2019.

May played for Melbourne in the 2021 premiership and is a dual All-Australian player.
