- Two roosters dumped at animal sanctuary in NSW
- The birds were found in tie-strapped plastic bags
- Animal sanctuary founder labelled the act ‘disgusting’
This is the heartbreaking moment an animal rescuer discovered two roosters ‘disgracefully’ dumped in sealed plastic bags dumped on her driveway.
Snowy Mountains local and founder of Smart Animal Sanctuary in NSW Lorene Cross discovered the two bags at the front of the shelter’s driveway.
Ms Cross initially thought the two bags had fallen off a rubbish trailer but soon discovered two roosters inside the sealed bags.
The former veterinarian nurse from New Zealand shared a video of the discovery to TikTok on Wednesday with the caption: ‘Not the best way to start our morning. Be kind to animals.’
The video shows Ms Cross carrying the plastic bags away from the roadside before cutting the tie-straps.

‘Oh my goodness, that’s ruthless,’ Ms Cross says.
Another woman is heard questioning how long the roosters had been there before they were discovered, with Ms Cross replying: ‘God only knows’.
After opening the two bags, Ms Cross was relieved to find the two white roosters alive.
The roosters are heard clucking as they walk on the grass near the shelter’s fence, with one woman claiming the animals are saying ‘thank you’ for setting them free.
Ms Cross labelled the dumping of animals in plastic bags as a ‘disgusting and disgraceful’ act.
‘To put them in a bag and just dump them in the driveway with no food… ‘I think it’s disgusting and disgraceful,’ Ms Cross told Yahoo News.
‘I’ve got four of my own dogs freely roaming around here and I know two of them would have loved a bit of KFC on the run basically. That’s just cruelty.’
Ms Cross said she has previously found roosters abandoned at the sanctuary, with the dead body of one rooster found in a bush.
‘People don’t seem to know what to do with roosters. They like to keep the girls [hens] happy and then they breed and they’ve got 10 roosters suddenly,’ Ms Cross said.
She added the dumping of animals ‘happens a lot’ and is a ‘major problem’ after she found six puppies left in the bush a few weeks ago and had to surgically remove collars from the necks of nine kittens.
Ms Cross recommends anyone thinking of re-homing their pet or animal to call a sanctuary first.
SMART Animal Sanctuary & Rehoming Centre was established in 2003 and is home to 52 dogs, 32 cats and several farm animals.
To the relief of Ms Cross, two roosters were found alive and well after cutting the tie-straps sealing the top of the plastic bags
The video has received more than 1.2million views and more than 2,800 comments, with many TikTok users thanking Ms Cross for rescuing the roosters.
‘You have got to be kidding, how cruel can people be!!! Thank you for saving their poor souls,’ one person posted.
‘This is horrific. those poor animals. There should be a licence in order to own animals. You are all amazing for the work you do,’ a second person wrote.
‘So cruel omg can’t stop crying. Why people do this. Thank god for people like you who would save them and look after animals in the right way,’ another added.
