Former Australian Test cricketer Damien Martyn has been rushed to hospital in an induced coma after being diagnosed with meningitis, according to media reports.
The 54-year-old, who played 67 Tests between 1992 and 2006 and 208 one-day internationals, was admitted on Boxing Day last week after falling ill while lying down.
Reports said he was being treated for meningitis, which can be deadly.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Adam Gilchrist, a legendary figure in the world of cricket and a close friend, has confirmed that Damien Martyn is receiving top-notch medical care. Speaking to The Australian newspaper, Gilchrist shared his confidence in the quality of treatment Martyn is getting.

A cricketer makes a cut shot.

Martyn, who was an integral part of Australia’s victorious 2003 World Cup squad, remains in the thoughts of many. His partner, Amanda, along with his family, is fully aware of the outpouring of support and positive thoughts coming their way, as Gilchrist noted.

The cricketing community is rallying around Martyn, with former Australian paceman adding his voice to those offering well wishes. “We wish him all the best,” he expressed, underscoring the collective hope for Martyn’s swift recovery.

Veteran sports broadcaster Jim Wilson was among those who sent Martyn their best wishes on social media.
Martyn’s seemingly effortless stroke play was his calling card, averaging 46.37 with the bat across 67 Tests for Australia.
Born in Darwin, the right-hander earned a Test debut at 21, replacing the late Dean Jones in the 1992-93 home series against West Indies and was Western Australia’s captain at 23.
His high score of 165 came against New Zealand in 2005, one of 13 Test centuries Martyn made in the baggy green.
Martyn played his final Test at Adelaide Oval in the 2006-07 Ashes series before dabbling in commentary.
Martyn played 208 ODIs, averaging 40.8.
He was part of Australia’s squad that won the 2003 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 88 in the final against India.
He retired in 2006 during the Ashes series and has kept a low profile since.
