Some independent petrol stations in regional Australia say they are now fresh out of fuel despite government assurances that there is no shortage, as wholesalers drastically ration supply and farmers reach crisis point.
The flow-on impact of motorists panic-buying petrol saw some regional independent retailers quickly run out of E10 and unleaded, and Transwest Fuels co-owner Sam Clifton said his supply of diesel has now dried up in NSW and Queensland too.

Australia is currently home to just two oil refineries, located in Brisbane and Newcastle, which together fulfill approximately 20% of the nation’s demand for liquid fuel.

There have been proposals to construct additional regional refineries, despite the high costs associated with such infrastructure projects, as a means to bolster local communities and alleviate supply strain.

“We need more refineries,” Clifton stated. “Ideally, there should be one near every capital city.”

Such a strategy would offer an additional layer of security. While the government might argue against the high costs, Clifton believes the investment is justified.

“The expense is worthwhile,” he continued, “because when the money circulates within Australia, it benefits the local economy.”
