An Australian paddleboarder in Hawaii mentioned that he and his group of friends relocated to higher ground and are taking shelter in a high-rise apartment after the tsunami alarms began to sound on the beach.
Charlie Verco, 24, hailing from Bondi, was scheduled to return home the next day but is now worried that flights departing from the island of O’ahu could be affected by the tsunami alert, which has been issued for all Hawaiian islands.
The latest Smartraveller advice warned Australians in Hawaii of the potential for tsunamis.
The advisory urged travelers in Hawaii to heed the instructions of authorities and evacuate without delay. “A magnitude 8.6 earthquake has occurred about 60 km offshore from the southern tip of the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia,” the notice states.
“A tsunami warning is in place for the west coast of the US including Alaska and Hawaii. There’s an evacuation order in place for Hawaii.
“If you’re in the affected area, proceed to higher ground as soon as possible. Should an official evacuation directive be given, promptly adhere to the guidance of local authorities.”
Similar advice has been given to popular holiday destinations Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands and the Solomon Islands.
Authorities on the US west coast have also issued a tsunami advisory and warned residents to stay away from the beach and waterways.
