Ben Roberts-Smith, a former member of the Special Air Services, is facing five charges of alleged war crimes, specifically murder, following an extensive investigation that spanned several years.

Today, the 47-year-old was apprehended at Sydney Domestic Airport upon arriving from Brisbane. Recent photographs capture the moment officers placed Roberts-Smith in handcuffs on the air bridge connecting the aircraft to the tarmac.

If these charges are upheld in court, they could result in a life imprisonment sentence. Roberts-Smith has consistently denied any misconduct during his military service.

He joined the armed forces in 1996, and was appointed to the Special Air Service Regiment, Australia’s most elite fighting force, in 2003.

He was discharged in 2013.
