A truck collision at the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, has shaken the community. The incident, which took place on Thursday, involved a crash into the synagogue’s building that also houses several school facilities, according to WDIV-TV reports.
Sources familiar with the situation informed the Associated Press and CNN that the individual driving the truck was found deceased at the scene.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard addressed the media, expressing that local law enforcement had been on high alert and prepared for such an occurrence due to recent intelligence updates. “The chief and I have been in constant communication for the past two weeks, sharing information whenever I’ve received national intelligence,” he stated.
Bouchard emphasized, “We have been discussing the unfortunate potential of this incident for some time now, so there was no lack of preparation on our part.”
In response to the crash, authorities have increased security measures around Jewish facilities in the area. “We are ensuring a heightened presence until we can fully understand and resolve the situation,” Bouchard added, underscoring the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the community.
“In addition, all Jewish facilities in the area are going to have a lot of extra presence around it until we figure this out.
FBI director Kash Patel said his personnel from his agency were on the scene responding to an “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation”.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was tracking the situation and working with police to get more information.
“This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” she said in a statement read on air by CNN.
“Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan, and I am hoping for everyone’s safety.
“Thank you to law enforcement for their swift action.”
Bouchard said it was too early to talk about potential ties to terrorism.
The sheriff’s office said authorities were clearing the building.
About a dozen parents sprinted to get their children from an early childhood learning centre inside the building after getting approval from police.
Temple Israel calls itself the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, with 12,000 members, according to its website.
It has an early childhood education centre and offers educational programs for families and adults.
The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all Jewish organisations in the area “to go into lockout protocol — nobody in or out of your building”.
