The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that rocked Turkey and neighbouring nation Syria is already in the thousands, with the toll expected to continue to soar in the coming days.

Rescuers are now racing against time in extreme weather conditions to save residents still trapped under mounds of rubble.

With aftershocks still being felt, and limit aid supplies. Emergency crews face an extremely difficult task in the days ahead.

Though many parts of the quake’s epicentre are virtually unrecognisable now, here are some before and after photos which illustrate the extent of the destruction.
