A WA grandfather is being remembered after the popular personality and car enthusiast was killed in a head-on collision, leaving his famous pink Chevrolet a mangled wreck.
Johnny Gray, 60, was filmed leaving a car meet in Alkimos, in Perth‘s north last night in his beloved 1956 chevy – a car locals knew well.

But just after 8pm on the Mitchell Freeway off-ramp, near Butler Boulevard, his classic car collided head-on with a Ford Ranger.

Police are still working out exactly what happened but friends and local residents believe confusion at the intersection may have played a role.

“[He] looked at that sign – straight to Lancelin, right to Perth City – he took the right to Perth City [and] was met by another car,” Johnson said.

Clearer and better signage is a safety overhaul locals have been calling for.

Local resident Felicia Hartmann expressed her concern to 9News, saying, “I’ve nearly mistaken the on-ramp for the off-ramp—it’s a terrible situation. The signage here needs significant improvement.”

Gray’s death pushes WA’s road toll to 141 – the highest it’s been in almost a decade.
