Two years following one of the most devastating mass casualty incidents in Sydney’s recent memory, a group of brave individuals has been honored for their remarkable acts of valor.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn has announced a special list of Australian Bravery Decorations, recognizing eight courageous individuals for their heroic efforts during a stabbing rampage that claimed six lives at Bondi Junction Westfield in 2024.
Among those honored are a dedicated nurse who stood by the injured in their final moments and the person affectionately dubbed “bollard man.” These individuals put their own safety aside to protect and aid strangers in peril.
Commendation for Brave Conduct
Noel McLaughlin, upon learning that his wife had been attacked, sprinted through the shopping center, alerting others to the unfolding danger. He reached his wife and provided first aid, though tragically, she later succumbed to her injuries.
In the midst of the chaos, nurse Catherine Molihan made the courageous decision to leave the safety of a locked store, where others had taken shelter, to attend to two men who had been wounded. She stayed with them, providing care, until emergency services arrived.
Nearby, nurse Catherine Molihan decided to leave a locked store where people had taken refuge, stepping back into danger to treat two wounded men and remain with them until help arrived.
In a statement, the Governor-General said all recipients were united by a “selfless, courageous, and determined response in unspeakable and horrific circumstances.”
“We also pay tribute to the 12 people injured, for their recovery and well-being, and all those whose lives were changed forever by the violence they witnessed on that terrible day,” she said.
If you have been impacted by the attack in Bondi there is support available.
