A group of thieves are on the run after a mother and her teenage son were threatened with a gun during a terrifying home invasion in Melbourne’s west overnight.
Police allege three hooded and masked thieves used a crowbar to smash their way through a bedroom window of a townhouse in Altona North just before 2.30am.

A peaceful night was shattered for a 16-year-old boy and his mother when they were jolted awake by an alarming commotion inside their home. The mother, hearing the disturbance from a nearby room, quickly went to her son’s side.

According to police reports, the intruders threatened the duo with a firearm, adding a terrifying element to the already frightening ordeal.

The assailants managed to steal a safe from the residence before making a swift escape in a white Volkswagen hatchback. Despite the shock and fear inflicted, the four other household members present at the time were unharmed physically.

The family, who have been renting the home for nearly a year, never anticipated such an event in what has otherwise been a trouble-free neighborhood. Neighbors, expressing their shock and sympathy, remarked on the unexpected nature of the incident.

“It’s terrifying. I don’t know what I would do in that moment. I feel really terrible for them,” shared one concerned neighbor, reflecting the community’s shared sense of unease and support for the affected family.
