Personnel from the United States boarded and seized a vessel off the coast of Venezuela, according to an official familiar with the matter, as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on Caracas.

The U.S. Coast Guard spearheaded the mission, with support from the U.S. military.

A spokesperson mentioned that the operation took place in international waters.

Recently, President Trump highlighted a “blockade” strategy, emphasizing his interest in Venezuela’s oil. He suggested that the U.S. should benefit from these resources if Maduro’s government falls. Currently, the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela manages Venezuela’s oil sector.

Chevron, based in Houston, remains the sole U.S. company actively drilling in Venezuela. They operate under a sanctions exemption, providing a portion of their production to PDVSA.

Despite holding the largest oil reserves globally, Venezuela’s production is hindered by international sanctions, significantly reducing its output capacity.

A significant portion of Venezuela’s oil is exported to China.

Venezuela slammed the blockade earlier this week, calling it “a reckless and serious threat.”

It said it would continue to defend its sovereignty and national interests.
