The Council of the Order of Australia has acknowledged the significant achievements of several prominent figures, including former federal finance minister Mathias Cormann. Cormann was celebrated for his impactful work in government reform, his contribution to multilateral affairs, and his efforts in advancing international economic development.

Originally from Belgium, Cormann transitioned from the Australian Senate to an influential role on the global stage as the secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Another notable honoree is Kristina Keneally, the former leader of New South Wales. She was recognized for her dedicated service as premier and her impactful tenure as a federal senator.

Steven Marshall, the former premier of South Australia, also received recognition. His commendable efforts in serving the business community, championing the rights of people with disabilities, and his engagement in governance and board roles were highlighted.

The Honours list this year is extensive, with 680 individuals receiving awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia. This includes 10 Companion (AC) awards, 38 Officer (AO) awards, 160 Member (AM) awards, and 472 Medal (OAM) awards.

  • 22 recipients of awards in the Military Division of the Order of Australia.
  • 187 Meritorious awards
  • 60 Distinguished and Conspicuous awards

Governor-General Sam Mostyn said the honourees reflected Australia’s values for service, community, kindness, curiosity, tenacity, and care.

“Congratulations to everyone recognised in the Australia Day 2026 Honours List,” she said.

“As the list so vividly showcases, so many Australians continue to give the best of themselves across many endeavours, in the interest of others. It is rewarding to see an increase in the number of awards, which reflects more nominations and recognition of the many Australians who inspire the best in all of us.”
