Space enthusiasts, you are in luck: those keen to stay up until the early hours of the morning may be rewarded with another astronomical event.
The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is set to reach its peak during the early hours of this week with up to 50 meteors per hour in the late-night sky, according to NASA.
Aussies have prime opportunity to view this celestial event as the Southern Hemisphere sees it best.

Want to observe for yourself? Here’s what you need to know.

When and how can I see it?

The Eta Aquarids (also spelled Aquariids) is a yearly event that typically takes place from April 19 to May 28, so it is already in progress.

The meteor shower is expected to reach its peak at 2am AEST on both May 6 and May 7.

Observers should make sure to look for a clear, night sky away from any light pollution.

Look around east, just above the horizon, and allow for half an hour for your eyes to adjust.

Watch for bright flashes or streaks of light across the night sky – patience is key.

According to NASA, fast meteors can leave “glowing trains” which may be visible between several seconds up to minutes.

Don’t forget to make a wish when you see one.

And rug up – make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, as it may be cold these nights.

When’s the next meteor shower?

If you miss the Eta Aquarids, the next meteor shower is in August.

The Perseids meteor shower is another annual event that peaks August 12 and 13, although best viewable in the Northern Hemisphere.
