More than 1500 people have been forced to evacuate after a 4 kilometre-long landside in an idyllic Italian town left homes teetering on the edge of a cliff.

A devastating cyclone, coupled with heavy rainfall, triggered a landslide in the Sicilian town of Niscemi on Sunday, resulting in a dramatic 45-meter drop in the landscape.

While there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, several homes are on the brink of collapse due to the event.

In response, the Italian government has earmarked €100 million ($171.7 million) for emergency measures and declared a national state of emergency across Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity with those impacted by the disaster.

Sicilian President Renato Schifani is leading the emergency response and said it was crucial to take climate change into account.

“In the reconstruction efforts ahead, we must consider the impact of climate change; it is imperative to rebuild in a way that mitigates future risks,” Meloni stated.

“Thanks to prompt actions, we managed to safeguard lives; now, our focus is on ensuring long-term protection for the region,” he added.
