Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart will be given a formal farewell with complete police honours at a private event held at the Victoria Police Academy in Glen Waverley.

The farewell for Senior Constable De Waart is organized for September 5, whereas Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson will be commemorated on September 8.

The two officers lost their lives at a property in Porepunkah, approximately 300km from Melbourne, during an ambush while they and another officer were delivering a warrant for alleged child sex offences to Dezi Freeman.

The third officer was seriously wounded and is recovering in hospital, while the manhunt to locate Freeman, who fled the scene, continues.

The tight-knit Alpine community continues to rally around the force in what has been described as some of its darkest days.

To pay tribute to the deceased officers, players, umpires, and officials at local football and netball clubs have pledged to wear blue armbands during the finals matches scheduled for this week.

Floral tributes continue to grow at Wangaratta Police Station, as people travel far and wide to pay their respects to the two officers.
