Health officials in Western Australia are urging fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers to get vaccinated against measles as another two new cases of measles have been confirmed.
It comes after a measles alert was issued when three cases of the disease were detected in the Perth and Pilbara regions last month.

The updated WA Health alert has listed several new exposure sites, including Perth Airport, Newman Airport and Denpasar Airport in Bali, Indonesia.

It also lists affected flights flown between Perth and Bali, with passengers on the flights told to monitor for symptoms.

These can include fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a red non-itchy rash three to four days later.

The rash usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

Dr Claire Huppertz said vaccination still remained the most powerful tool against the highly infectious disease.

“I urge everyone between the ages of 30 and 60, whether traveling for business or leisure, to verify their measles vaccination status,” she stated.

“The measles vaccine is free to anyone born after 1965, offers a high level of protection against the disease, and prevents spread in the community.

“Measles is highly infectious and continues to pose a risk to non-immune people working on mine sites in regional WA.”

According to government figures, 77 Australians were diagnosed with measles between January and May this year.

Most of these people are unvaccinated, and had also travelled overseas shortly before contracting the disease.
