'The America we thought we knew before Trump is not coming back'

One year ago, Donald Trump returned to the White House on a storm of threatened vengeance on his enemies, promises of wealth to the US people, and a pledge to bring America into a new golden age.

The inauguration on January 20 marked the onset of one of the most chaotic years in recent U.S. political history.

If Trump completes his term, we still have three more years of the MAGA era to navigate.

“No obvious successor to Trump has emerged,” experts note.

Part of Trump’s legacy, according to analysts, is the further erosion of trust in numerous American institutions, including government agencies. However, they argue this was not entirely his doing.

Shortis pointed out, “By the time Trump arrived on the scene, public trust was already waning, which paved the way for his ascent.”

She further explained that the “political resolve and resources” required to restore this trust and forge a “new America” would be immense.

“Then again, the United States is quite remarkably good at rebuilding itself,” she said.

“The America we thought we knew before Trump is not coming back.”
