Millions shivering as polar blast brings freezing morning

A polar blast has left millions shivering this morning as it sweeps through south-east Australia.

Both Sydney and Brisbane are experiencing their coldest mornings of the year so far, following Sydney recording its chilliest day of 2025 yesterday, according to Jonathan How from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Temperatures bottomed out at 11 or 12 degrees in some suburbs of southern Brisbane.

But that sounds like a balmy spring day next to the NSW town of Goulburn, where How said the temperature this morning was -7 degrees.

“We will see a mild and sunny day today, but there is more cold weather on the way,” How said on Today.

He mentioned that although the first week of winter has been notably cold due to the present cold front, the temperatures are expected to be above average for most of the season.

But another polar blast is predicted to hit Australia on Saturday and Sunday.

Adelaide is likely to experience rain tonight, with Melbourne expecting precipitation tomorrow, How noted. A new cold front is predicted to move in on Saturday and Sunday, impacting NSW and Queensland as well.

“So it is typical for this time of year, but a bit of a shock to the system,” How said.
