'I'm in great shape': Trump says he will undergo fitness test

US President Donald Trump said he will travel to a military hospital for a “semi-annual physical,” describing it as a routine exam.

“I think I’m in great shape, but I’ll let you know,” Trump said from the Oval Office ahead of a meeting with the Finnish president.

The administration had previously stated that Trump would visit the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland for a “yearly check-up.”

That initial description prompted confusion, since Trump had received an “annual” exam just six months ago.

At the time, Trump’s physician assessed him as “fully fit” to fulfill his responsibilities, stating in an April note that he was in “excellent health” and referencing his regular golf sessions as proof of his fitness.

Subsequently, Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition common in older adults where blood can accumulate in the veins. The diagnosis was revealed by the White House amid increased attention over photos displaying swelling in Trump’s legs.

The president in recent months has also faced speculation over bruising on his hand that he has tried at times to cover with makeup.

However, chronic venous insufficiency is regarded as a benign and controllable condition, with Trump’s doctor attributing the bruising to the frequent handshaking and aspirin intake, which both make bruising easier.

On Thursday, Trump assured that neither was causing any issues for him, emphasizing that the upcoming visit to Walter Reed was primarily a preventative measure.

“I have no difficulty so far,” Trump said. “When I’m around, I like to check. Always be early, it’s a lesson for a lot of people.”

The White House said the president would also attend a “planned meeting” and deliver remarks to troops while at the hospital.
