The region experienced several terrorist attacks in 2020 and 2021, including a stabbing incident in February 2020 where an Australian was injured.
Resort islands across the Maldives, where tens of thousands of Aussies travel each year, are typically safe and peaceful.
Smartraveller recommended tourists avoid all large public gatherings, monitor local media and follow the advice of local authorities to avoid areas impacted by violence.
