The group Democracy Forward sued the Justice Department and the FBI for communications by senior administration officials regarding Epstein documents and any correspondence linking him with Trump.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, appears to the be first of its kind.

The House Oversight Committee has also issued a subpoena to the Justice Department for files on the investigation, as part of a congressional inquiry that lawmakers believe could reveal connections to Trump and other former senior officials.

Since Epstein’s death in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges, conservative conspiracy theorists have fueled theories about the information investigators uncovered on the wealthy financier and who else might have known about his sexual abuse of teenage girls.

Trump has denied having prior knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, claiming he severed their relationship long ago, and has consistently attempted to move beyond the Justice Department’s choice not to provide a comprehensive report of the investigation. However, lawmakers from both major political parties have been unwilling to let the matter drop.
