A man who allegedly killed his girlfriend when he lost control of his car in Melbourne has been released on bail.

The orange Ford Mustang was being driven on Dunmore Drive in Truganina when it crashed into an unoccupied vehicle about 1am on Wednesday.

Vikramjeet Singh, 23, was taken to hospital for his injuries, but his girlfriend Arshdeep Kaur, 24, died at the scene.

Singh was charged with dangerous driving causing death and careless driving last night.

He was remanded in custody until he appeared in Melbourne’s Magistrates’ Court today.

The prosecution informed the court that Singh, currently in Australia on a temporary visa, was probably exceeding the 50-kilometre limit when he lost control.

The court heard that Singh had a clean record, with not even a speeding ticket to his name, prior to this week’s crash.

The magistrate conceded he is now in a “world of trouble”.

Singh sought bail, with his lawyer contending that without bail, his client could be detained for up to 18 months before his case is heard, potentially longer than his expected non-parole period.

The magistrate has agreed and released him on provisional bail.

Singh is required to report to police twice a week, stay in Victoria and not drive a car.

Kaur’s family has set up a GoFundMe page, which has already raised almost $25,000.

They told 9News they are shocked and want justice.

Singh has shared his condolences to her family through his lawyer.

“Mr Singh asked me to express his condolences to the family of the young woman who passed away,” his lawyer Hayden Rattray said.
