Victor Dominello, the NSW minister who led an evolution of an app critical to the state’s coronavirus response and pushed for gambling reforms, is retiring from politics.

Dominello said a family health issue which arose in 2019 and has “since deteriorated” requires his attention, and led to this “difficult decision”.

The multi-faceted Service NSW app, which housed COVID-19 vaccination information and allowed QR check-ins, and the digitalisation of NSW driver license will probably be regarded as some of Dominello’s biggest successes.

His keenness to take on the powerful gambling companies, pushing for the introduction of a compulsory gambling debit card to counter problem gambling and money laundering, was also admired by many.

The 55-year-old has held the western Sydney seat of Ryde for 14 years and served as a Minister under the Berejiklian and Perrottet governments since 2011.

“The condition is one of those conditions that only gets worse,” Dominello said, addressing the health issues one undisclosed member of his family is battling.

Reflecting on his time as a member of parliament, Dominello joked he didn’t like politics but “enjoyed the policy”.

“I enjoy the reform, that’s what inspires me to be around great people.

“We just focus on the policy rather than the politics.”

World waited for a miracle that never came
