Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “will not be mourned” as he doubled down on Australia’s support for the US to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

During a press conference earlier today, Alabese expressed support for the courageous citizens of Iran, emphasizing Australia’s solidarity with their fight against a repressive regime.

“I recognize this is an incredibly challenging period for the many Australians who have family and friends in the Middle East. The upcoming days will be tough and unpredictable,” Albanese remarked.

He described the situation as a “threat to global stability.”

Albanese further stated, “The global community has been unequivocal that Iran’s regime should never be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon.”

He reaffirmed, “Australia stands beside the brave people of Iran in their battle against tyranny.”

Opposition leader Angus Taylor criticized Iran’s regime, labeling it as “authoritarian, antisemitic, and deplorable.”

“It wants nuclear weapons, seeks the destruction of Israel, has encouraged terrorism through its proxies – Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis – and has supplied weapons to Russia to support Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” he said in a post on X.

“We pray for the Iranian people at this time.”
