Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with the state and territory leaders.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has brought months of a stalemate to an end after striking a $25 billion health deal with the states and territories at the 11th hour.
The national cabinet met this morning to reach a new five-year funding agreement for public hospitals.

Following discussions, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the federal government has committed to an additional $25 billion in funding for public hospitals. This boosts the total investment to an unprecedented $219.6 billion over the coming five years.

This new arrangement surpasses Albanese’s previous offer in December by $2 billion. The urgency to finalize the deal was heightened by the impending caretaker period for the South Australian government, beginning February 21, due to the upcoming state election.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler acknowledged the time constraints in securing an agreement before the current funding arrangement ends on June 30, emphasizing the critical need for a resolution today.

“I’ve been clear that the time remaining to negotiate a five-year deal before June 30 is diminishing,” he stated to reporters yesterday.

The 2023 agreement stipulates that the federal government will increase its contribution to public hospital funding to 42.5% by 2030 and further to 45% by 2035. In return, states and territories are expected to contribute to disability services funding.
