Police said the officer was attending an address in Torquay, south west of Melbourne, to conduct a welfare check on a resident about 4.30pm today.
The resident allegedly rushed at police officers with a knife, stabbing a male officer multiple times.
Police used their taser and OC spray and arrested the 49-year-old Torquay man, who is assisting police with their enquiries.
The police officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
