Chris Minns, who is pushing for parliament to grant “extraordinary powers” to the state government to restrict protests in the wake of terrorist attacks, warned that today was not the time to stage a rally.

“Reconsider your plans. Don’t proceed,” advised Minns during an interview with Today.

He emphasized, “The NSW Police Force understands that now is not the right moment for public gatherings that might escalate tensions or pose further risks to community safety.”

“Through Operation Shelter, we will orchestrate a comprehensive police response to any large-scale public assemblies during this period,” he added.

Authorities are strongly advising individuals considering attendance at unauthorized gatherings to think twice.

Next week, Minns is anticipated to reconvene the NSW parliament to propose new legislation concerning protest activities and firearm regulations.

Earlier this week, the premier outlined that the forthcoming laws would empower police to “designate specific areas where public assemblies are restricted for a set duration” in the aftermath of a terrorism threat.

“That might be any part of the state or all over the state. No public assemblies in a designated area will be able to be authorised, including by a court,” he told reporters.

“These are obviously extraordinary powers – not seen before in any jurisdiction in the country.”
