Premier responds to state funeral question for John Laws

The possibility of a state funeral for the iconic broadcaster John Laws is under consideration, as New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed the government’s eagerness to extend such an honor.

Laws died aged 90 at his Woolloomoolloo home in Sydney on the weekend after spending two weeks in hospital last month.
His death has sparked a wave of tributes, including from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.

Premier Minns paid homage to Laws, affectionately known as “Golden Tonsils,” and reiterated his admiration during an appearance on Today, lauding the broadcaster as an “absolute legend.”

“It’s a significant loss for both the broadcasting industry and Australia as a whole,” Minns remarked.

When questioned about the potential for a state funeral for Laws, who captivated Australian audiences throughout his illustrious career, Minns indicated that it was indeed a possibility.

“Although I have yet to consult with the family to understand their wishes, we are committed to recognizing his remarkable legacy and influence,” Minns stated.

“Should the family wish to proceed, we would be honored to provide a state funeral.”

Laws retired from radio for the second and final time just last year, after a career spanning more than 70 years.
