In a turbulent Sunday event in the Central Business District, two police officers ended up in the hospital following a confrontation with protesters during a March for Australia rally against immigration. The protest was met by counter-demonstrators, who reportedly hurled large rocks, along with rotten fruit and bottles containing shards of glass, at law enforcement.

This unrest occurred shortly after a disturbing incident in broad daylight near Spencer Street, where a woman was unexpectedly stabbed in the chest by a stranger, highlighting a growing concern for public safety in the area.

In the wake of these events, Victoria Police, represented by figures such as Cheeseman, have been vocal in their plea for increased support and funding from the State government. However, the response from authorities, including Allan, was firm, stating that the police already possess sufficient resources to manage protests and handle violent situations effectively.

“The officers have the resources and, crucially, the necessary powers to manage these protesters,” Allan asserted, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to fully utilize these capabilities to hold perpetrators accountable. To date, only one individual has been taken into custody related to Sunday’s demonstration.

Allan further expressed her gratitude towards Victoria Police for their efforts in maintaining community safety and responding promptly to the violent actions exhibited by the protesters. “Their choice to resort to violence was unacceptable,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of maintaining order and security during such volatile gatherings.

“I want to thank Victoria police for the way they kept the community safe and dealt swiftly with this group of protesters who were choosing to use violence. It was unacceptable,” she said.

“It is my expectation that the full force of the law will be brought to those who perpetrated this violence, which subsequently has been identified and are being investigated by Victoria Police.”
