The head of a wealthy American family has been found guilty of murdering her former son-in-law, a well-known law professor embroiled in a contentious custody dispute with his ex-wife when he was shot in 2014.
Following weeks of proceedings, the jury found Donna Adelson guilty on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the killing of Florida State University law professor Daniel Markel in Tallahassee, where he worked.
For over a decade, the case captivated Florida due to its sordid details of a tumultuous divorce, strained relations with affluent in-laws, and custody disputes leading to the murder.
Wendi Adelson denied involvement in the killing and has not been charged.
During the trial, prosecutors depicted Donna Adelson as the calculated and manipulative leader of a wealthy South Florida clan with both the means and motivation to arrange the murder of the ex-son-in-law she “despised”.
Defense lawyers argued that the prosecution lacked enough evidence to connect the elderly grandmother to the murder scheme, instead highlighting the involvement of others and pointing the finger at two of Adelson’s adult offspring.
Charles Adelson is serving a life sentence, as is his ex-girlfriend Katherine Magbanua.
The prosecution argued that Magbanua acted as the intermediary for the two men assigned to execute the murder: Sigfredo Garcia, who received a lifetime sentence, and Luis Rivera, serving 19 years after assisting the prosecution.
